Sort products in the Sonos app

The Sonos app now more intuitively chooses which room or group to display when you first open the app, along with new options for sorting your products in the System tab.

To enable sort order options, you must enable tab navigation.

App Orientation

App orientation refers to which room or group the Sonos app is connected to at any given time, particularly when you first open the app. It also determines what appears in the miniplayer and which room the play button controls.

When you open the Sonos app, it automatically connects to the last room or group you were using. If that room or group is no longer available, or a significant period of time has passed without any playback activity on that room or group, the app selects a room based on your current Sort Order preference.

Sort Order

You can choose how your products and groups are sorted in the System tab. After opening the app, navigate to the System tab icon, represented by three vertical lines System tab, and select Sort Order from the top right to choose from the following options:

  • Actively Playing (Default): Products currently playing music appear at the top, sorted alphabetically. Products not playing anything appear below, also sorted alphabetically. If nothing is playing, the top alphabetically sorted room is selected.
  • Frequently Used: Products are sorted based on how often you interact with them in the Sonos app, such as controlling playback, volume, and grouping. This data is stored on your device and can be reset by going to App Preferences, then selecting Reset App.
  • Alphabetical: Products or groups are sorted alphabetically.
  • Pin: Pin specific products to keep them at the top of your System tab. Pinned products work alongside Actively Playing, Alphabetical, or Frequently Used. Alternatively, you can pin all products to set a persistent custom order.

Things to note

  • When tab navigation is not enabled, the default Sort Order is alphabetical.
  • Sort Order is stored per device and per app. Changes on one device will not affect other devices on your system.
  • Changes to product sorting are not reflected on the list in real time. You’ll need to back out of the product list and enter it again to see changes.
  • Sort order will not appear on households with only a single product.
  • Newly added products on the Sonos app will initially appear at the bottom of the list.
  • Any product type (including headphones and portables) can be pinned.

Bluetooth products

  • When Actively Playing is selected, products that use Bluetooth mode, such as headphones and portables, appear at the top if connected and playing content via Bluetooth.
    • When not playing content, but connected via Bluetooth, these products will appear in the "not actively playing" category then sorted alphabetically.
  • If multiple headphones or portables are connected, they will be sorted alphabetically.
  • Frequently Used sorts headphones and portables based on how often they are connected via Bluetooth and interacted with in the Sonos app.
