Downgrade a Sonos product to S1

The Sonos S1 Controller app is used to control Sonos’ legacy software platform, and is primarily intended for systems including products that require the Sonos S1 Controller app. If all of your products are compatible with the latest Sonos software, we recommend continuing to use or updating to the latest version of the Sonos app. The S1 controller app will not receive the same ongoing features and improvements as the latest Sonos software.

Some products can be downgraded to use the Sonos S1 Controller app when they need to be added to an existing S1 system. The Sonos S1 Controller app will let you know if a product needs to be downgraded before it can be added.

Not sure whether you need the Sonos S1 Controller app? Check which Sonos products work with each version of the Sonos app on our compatibility article before continuing.

Before you start

  • Confirm if a downgrade is necessary. If you're not adding a product to an existing S1 system, you may not need to downgrade it. Check the product compatibility article and consider using the latest Sonos software instead.
  • Download the Sonos app for iOS or Android. If you already have the Sonos app downloaded, make sure it's been updated to the latest version. The Sonos app is required to go through the downgrade process.

If you have an existing S1 only system

  1. Make sure the Sonos product you'd like to downgrade has been factory reset. A Sonos product that has been reset will show a flashing green status light.
  2. Download and open the Sonos app for iOS or Android.
  3. Select Speaker or component.
  4. Continue through the setup process by accepting the Terms of Use and signing in to a Sonos account.
  5. When presented with a pop-up that shows “Searching for nearby products,” dismiss it by swiping it away.
  6. Go to the Settings icon, a gear Settings menu and select Help icon shown as a question mark in a circle in the Sonos app Visit Help Center.
  7. Under Legacy Apps, select Sonos S1 App.
  8. Select Downgrade Product to S1.
  9. The app will detect your product nearby. Follow the instructions to downgrade your product's software to S1.
  10. Once the downgrade process is complete, close the Sonos app and open the Sonos S1 Controller app for iOS or Android, then add your product to your S1 system.

If you maintain separate Sonos and S1 systems and use both the Sonos app and the S1 Controller app

  1. Make sure the Sonos product you'd like to downgrade has been factory reset. A Sonos product that has been reset will show a flashing green status light.
  2. Open the Sonos app for iOS or Android. If you are prompted to add the Sonos product that you've just reset, dismiss the pop-up.
  3. Go to the Settings icon, a gear Settings menu and select Help icon shown as a question mark in a circle in the Sonos app Visit Help Center.
  4. Under Legacy Apps, select Sonos S1 App.
  5. Select Downgrade Product to S1.
  6. The app will detect your product nearby. Follow the instructions to downgrade your product's software to S1.
  7. Once the downgrade process is complete, dismiss any pop-ups you see asking you to set up your downgraded product.
  8. Close the Sonos app and open the Sonos S1 Controller app for iOS or Android, then add your product to your S1 system.
