Set up the Google Assistant with a voice-enabled Sonos product
This article will guide you through setting up the Google Assistant on your voice-enabled Sonos product. You can also set up the Google Assistant on Sonos using other devices, like a Google Home. See our article on setting up a Google Assistant device to control Sonos to learn how.
The Google Assistant is available on Sonos Arc, Beam (Gen 1 and 2), Move, One, and Roam.
Before you start
- Check if the Google Assistant is available on Sonos in your region.
- Download the Google Assistant app to your mobile device. We recommend opening the app and signing into your Google account before you begin.
- Make sure your voice-enabled Sonos product has been set up and added to your Sonos system, and that your system is running the latest software version.
1
Get started
Open the Sonos app for iOS or Android and navigate to your voice assistant settings to add the Google Assistant.
- Sonos app: Go to the Settings menu and select Manage next to My System. Select Voice Assistants, then choose Add a voice assistant.
- Sonos S1 Controller app: From the Settings tab, select Services & Voice, then choose Add a Service.
When prompted, select the Google Assistant from the list, then select a speaker to use.
2
Set up your speaker in the Google Assistant app
After selecting your speaker in the Sonos app, you’ll be taken to the Google Assistant app.
During the Google Assistant app’s setup process, you will:
- Give the Sonos product permission to use your Google account
- Provide your address for location-based services
- Add music services to your Google Assistant, and choose a default music service.
After adding your Sonos product, go back to the Sonos app to finish the setup process.
3
Finish the setup process in the Sonos app
When you return to the Sonos app, confirm that you’ve set a default music service in the Google Assistant app, and choose whether or not your Sonos product will chime when you say the “Hey Google” wake word.
You can turn the wake word chime on and off in the Sonos app’s settings.
4
Use the Google Assistant with your Sonos product
After the Google Assistant has been set up, you’re ready to use the Google Assistant with Sonos.
You can add the Google Assistant to additional Sonos speakers by repeating steps 1 - 3 for each product.
Supported music services
To see available music services, open the Assistant app for iOS or Android, select your profile icon to get to your account page, and then select Music. Available services are listed under More Music Services. Music service availability will vary by region.
You can ask your Google Assistant to play music from iHeartRadio, TIDAL, and TuneIn Radio if those services are already added to your Sonos system, but they can’t be directly added to your Google Assistant app.
