Grouping your portable speakers using Bluetooth

You can group up to four supported Sonos portable speakers together to play the same content in sync while away from your home’s WiFi using Bluetooth.

This feature is available for Move 2 and Play.

Before you start

  • Sonos portable speakers must be set up on the Sonos app and added to the same Sonos household.
  • Portable speakers must be disconnected from WiFi.
  • Portable speakers have charge and are powered on.
  • Use Bluetooth to connect your phone to one of your Sonos products, then begin streaming content.

Using the Sonos app

While grouping your products with Bluetooth, use of the Sonos app will be limited. The app will present information about how to configure your group, however all other app functionality is disabled.

Group and ungroup using button or touch controls

Grouping

You can press and hold the Play / Pause button for 1 - 2 seconds on your Sonos Play or Move 2 to group it together with the speaker that’s currently playing Bluetooth audio.

Ungrouping

Pressing the Play / Pause button on the Sonos product that originally formed the group will dissolve the group. You can also press and hold the Play / Pause button to remove an individual product from a group.

Portables grouped using Bluetooth can also be ungrouped unintentionally due to the following reasons:

  • Entering Sleep Mode
  • Powering off
  • Battery depletion
  • Products being placed too far apart
  • 24 hours of idle time with no audio playback

Speakers must be ungrouped after returning to WiFi before they will re-join your Sonos system.

Changing the volume

To adjust the volume of portables grouped using Bluetooth, use your product’s hardware controls to control the volume of individual speakers.

Adjusting the volume on your Bluetooth connected mobile device will change the volume of the entire group.

Using playback controls

Using playback controls (play, pause, skip, previous) on any product in the group will adjust playback for the entire group.
