Share your Windows music folder with Sonos

Follow the steps in this article to share a music folder from your Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer to your local network. Sharing the folder will allow you to add it to Sonos to use for your local music library.

After following these steps, the music folder will be ready to share with your Sonos products, and you’ll know the folder’s network path that you’ll add to the Sonos app.

Add a local user to your Windows PC

Follow the instructions in this Microsoft support article to add a new local account to your PC. You’ll use the username and password from the new local user to add your music folder to Sonos.

Share your music folder in Windows

  1. In File Explorer, navigate to the folder containing your music files.
  2. Right click on your music folder and select Properties.
  3. In the Properties window, select the Sharing tab.
  4. Select Advanced Sharing, then check the box next to Share this folder.
  5. Select Permissions and look for your new local account listed under “Group or user names.”
    1. If the new local account is not listed, select Add… and then type in the name of the account under “Enter the object names to select.” You can select Check Names to make sure Windows is adding the correct user account.
  6. With your local account selected, make sure the Allow box is checked next to the Read permission.
  7. Select the Everyone group and make sure there isn’t a checked box in the Deny column for the Read permission.
  8. Select OK to get back to the Properties window.

The music folder is now shared on your local network. You should now see that your music folder has a “Shared” status.

You’ll also see a Network Path listed in the same window. Take note of this network path, as you’ll be using it to add your music folder to Sonos. The network path should be in the following format:

\\Hostname\Folder Name
