Alexa Smart Home Device Groups and Sonos

This article will guide you through setting up and adding your Sonos products to an Alexa Smart Home Device Group. This will allow you to give voice commands to multiple Sonos products at once using an Alexa-enabled device, like an Echo Dot, using group names like “downstairs” or “outside.”

Using Alexa Smart Home Device Groups will not allow music to play on Echo devices and Sonos products at the same time.

Create an Alexa Smart Home Device Group with Sonos speakers

  1. Open the Alexa app and tap the Devices icon.
  2. Tap the + icon, and then Add group.
  3. Tap Create a room or device group, then tap Next.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to name your Alexa group and choose the group’s Alexa-enabled device and its Sonos products.

Choose your preferred speaker

After you’ve created the Smart Home Group, you need to specify which Sonos products will play when you ask Alexa to play music to your group. Navigate to the Devices tab of the Alexa app and press Choose speakers. Select all of the Sonos products that you’d like to hear when you ask Alexa to play music to this group. If no speaker is selected for the group, only the Alexa-enabled device will play the audio you request.

You can find more information in Amazon’s article on Smart Home Device Groups.
