No sound from Amp with a flashing orange and white light

If the amplifier in a Sonos Amp or Connect:Amp is overloaded or overheating, it will go into a fault mode to prevent damage. In a fault mode, the Amp mutes its audio and the status light flashes orange and white.

Causes

There are a few reasons why an amp fault can occur:

  • The speaker wires are not properly plugged in or are touching each other.
  • The speaker wires are damaged.
  • The Amp is overheating due to inadequate airflow. This can happen if other devices are stacked on top of the Amp or if the Amp is in an enclosed space.
  • There’s too much of a load on the amplifier. Make sure your speakers have an impedance rating between 4 and 8 ohms. If you have 4 ohm speakers, you can connect one pair to the Amp. If you have 8 ohm speakers, you can connect two pairs in parallel.
  • There’s a problem with the speakers themselves.

Finding the cause of an amp fault

These steps will help you narrow down the cause of a recurring amp fault. You’ll first find out if your Amp or Connect:Amp goes into a fault mode with no speakers attached, then attach speakers one by one to see if a particular speaker (or speaker wire) is causing the problem.

Test your Amp with no speakers attached

  1. Unplug your Amp from power, then disconnect both of the speakers from the terminals on the back.
  2. Plug the Amp back in to power and wait until you see a solid white status light.
  3. Be absolutely sure you’ve unplugged all speakers from the Amp, then use the Sonos app to set your Amp’s volume to 100%.
  4. Start playing some music to the Amp. You won’t hear any audio during this test. Check and see if the status light remains solid white or if it changes to flashing orange and white.

If the status light begins flashing orange and white during this test, there may be a problem with the internal amplifier of the Amp. Please contact the Sonos Customer Care team for further help.

If the status light remains white during this test, the internal amplifier is working fine. You can move on to testing one speaker at time by following the steps below.

Test your Amp with one speaker at a time

  1. Unplug the Amp from power. If any speakers are still wired to the Amp, disconnect them from the terminals on the back.
  2. Reconnect one of the speakers to the Amp.
  3. Reconnect power to the Amp and wait for the solid white status light.
  4. Play some music to the Amp using the Sonos app.

If music plays successfully, then the connected speaker and its wiring are operating fine.

Repeat this test for any other speakers you use with the Amp. If one specific speaker causes a fault, there may be a problem with the speaker itself or the wiring that the speaker is using.
