Adjust Line-In Audio Compression

This article will provide information about Line-In Audio Compression and how to change it in the Sonos app. See our article on using Line-In for more information on how to set it up on your Sonos system.

Line-In Audio Compression allows you to choose if Sonos compresses the audio to reduce the load placed on your Sonos products when streaming Line-In audio. Follow these steps to change the Audio Compression level on your Sonos system:

Sonos app for iOS or Android

  1. Go to the Settings menu.
  2. Select the Manage button next to My System.
  3. Select Audio Compression.
  4. Choose from the options below.

Sonos S1 Controller app for iOS or Android

  1. From the Settings tab, select System.
  2. Select Audio Compression.
  3. Choose from the options below.

Sonos automatically sets the best Audio Compression level for your system. However, you can adjust these settings using the following guidelines:

Compression setting

Description

Automatic

Automatic is the default setting for all Line-In products and is recommended by Sonos. This setting will play uncompressed (WAV) audio by default, but will switch to compressed (SBC) audio if needed depending on the performance of your local network.

Compressed

Compressed uses the SBC codec which reduces the quality of the audio but puts much less strain on your network.

Uncompressed (S1 Controller app only)

Uncompressed uses the WAV format which provides higher quality audio. Uncompressed audio may put a lot of strain on your network, especially if you have a lot of Sonos products. Use uncompressed if you want the highest audio quality for your Sonos system.
